ABU DHABI, 9th October, 2019 (WAM) — The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and the Cyber Security Council have signed a memorandum of understanding that aims to support the development and review of cyber strategies, policies and standards for the energy sector in the country.
The memorandum was signed at the headquarters of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation in Abu Dhabi, by His Excellency Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Foundation and His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government.
The memorandum of understanding comes within the framework of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation’s commitment to enhancing security and flexibility and adopting the best cyber technologies in the environmentally friendly energy sector in the country, in addition to strengthening the strategic partnership between the Corporation and the Cyber Security Council through the exchange of knowledge and expertise and support for specialized training programs, in addition to providing expertise. Required to establish a security operations center at the local level in cooperation with the Cyber Security Council.
On this occasion, His Excellency Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, said: The Memorandum of Understanding is an important step in the process of developing electronic strategies to secure the vital infrastructure of the energy sector in order to achieve the state’s goals in this sector, especially that the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation It plays a leading role in the field of cybersecurity in the nuclear energy sector at the global level, where cybersecurity is an important focus of the organization that follows a proactive approach in this field that is witnessing continuous progress.
Al Hammadi added that through close cooperation with the UAE Cyber Security Council, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation continues to be committed to exchanging best practices with the aim of strengthening the country for its global leadership position in the field of innovation using the most advanced electronic systems.
Given the quantum leap the world is witnessing in the field of cybersecurity and the consolidation of the country’s leading position globally in the same field, the UAE ranked fifth globally thanks to its strong cyber infrastructure, in the Global Cybersecurity Index 2020 report issued by the International Telecommunication Union.
For his part, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government, said: We are working within the framework of the wise leadership’s message to strengthen the vital cyber sector in order to reduce risks, establish confidence, enable growth for all sectors, and raise response readiness. Accordingly, the memorandum of understanding came with the aim of uniting efforts and capabilities for the development and dissemination of modern technologies that enhance and contribute to the establishment of protected infrastructure.
His Excellency stressed that the UAE’s forward-looking approach to moving forward in the digital world through a developed and secure infrastructure requires updating technical systems and ensuring continuity of modernization in accordance with developments, and this in turn contributes to developing the expertise of the UAE cybersecurity sector at the international level, and enhancing the transfer and exchange of knowledge and services at the international level. world level.
The memorandum of understanding comes to complement the achievements of the first forum for cybersecurity leaders in the energy sector, which was held last September, and organized by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation in cooperation with the Cyber Security Council, the US Department of State, the US Department of Energy, and international experts, including Robert Lee, founder of Dragos Specialized Company. in Cyber Security, which discussed the current cybersecurity landscape with more than 117 experts who exchanged best practices to promote the transition to environmentally friendly energy sources in a sustainable manner.
Under the memorandum, the two sides look forward to co-hosting another forum for cybersecurity leaders in the energy sector at the local level in 2023, in order to share knowledge on key issues related to the cybersecurity strategy and its implementation. The forum comes in line with the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation’s support for the national cybersecurity strategy in the country, by working with local and international partners to enhance flexibility and set standards and requirements related to cybersecurity to ensure compliance with digital government systems and enablers.
Also, the Cyber Security Council will cooperate with the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation in developing and conducting periodic exercises for the energy sector to respond to any cyber challenges.
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plants, developed by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, use the latest and most advanced nuclear technologies, as all systems are aligned according to the cyber standards approved in this regard in cooperation with the Cyber Security Council to ensure compliance.
