Triathlon Ironman Hawaii: Live Ticker – Race

19:23

That’s how the Germans lie

The five German starters did very different swims: While Angert should be satisfied as first, Lange is 1:27 minutes behind in 24th place. Clavel came out of the water with the same group as 26th, Dreitz as 33rd is already 3:23 minutes behind, Kienle as 46th even 4:42 minutes.

19:22

Svensson first on the bike

Incidentally, Jesper Svensson is the first on the bike. Angert lost a good twenty seconds on the Swede when changing.

19:19

Amberger and Currie are there

One more correction, by the way, because our colleagues from ZDF unfortunately led us down the wrong path. Both Amberger and Currie are in the race.

19:18

Ditlev almost two minutes behind

Co-favorite Ditlev took an even bigger deficit out of the water. The Dane is almost two minutes behind the leaders.

19:17

Favorites in Group 1, Lange 1:27 behind

Swimming has already provided a few surprises here. Above all, the fact that the Norwegians Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden come out of the water in the first group is a first statement. By the way, Lange is 1:27 behind the first group, he arrived with the second big group.

19:16

The result of swimming

1. Florian Angert 0:48:15
2. Sam Laidlow 0:48:16
3. Robert Wilkowiecki 0:48:18
4. Jesper Svensson 0:48:18
5. Josh Amberger 0:48:20

19:14

Angered to be the first out

Florian Angert is the first out of the water. The time: 48:15. Right behind at the Sam Laidlow. A total of 19 athletes are in the first group.

19:12

Attack by Laidlow

Frenchman Laidlow is now attacking Angert. There are only a few meters to the end of the swim course, there will no longer be any large distances here. Incidentally, it is exciting to observe from a bird’s eye view: the triathletes use their legs significantly less than their arms when swimming. Because they still need their legs for the other two disciplines.

19:10

How far does Lange fall behind?

The question is how far Lange falls behind. The gap is getting bigger by the minute. He shouldn’t afford to leave too much behind.

19:08

Swimming is in the final phase

The swimming is in the final phase. There is still a large group ahead, led by Angert and Laidlow. Lange has now been swallowed up by the second large group. Incidentally, Sibbersen’s record will in all likelihood hold.

19:00

Will the swimming record fall today?

As every year, the question arises in the individual disciplines: Will the record fall? The current one is from 2018 by Jan Sibbersen. He needed 46:29 minutes for the 3.86 kilometers.

18:58

Long in no man’s land

Lange is in a bit of no man’s land right now. The Hessian is directly between the two large groups and swims alone. That would take effort…

18:56

Swimming Angert’s best discipline

Incidentally, Angert used to be a competitive swimmer, so it’s no wonder that the first discipline is also his strongest. Let’s see if he stays in the lead until the end.

18:54

A swim classic

Now that the athletes are more than halfway through the swim, it’s time for a (true) classic: you can’t win the race in swimming – you can lose it. In this sense, Angert is doing something right right now…

18:50

Amberger and Currie not at the start

We were already looking for the top swimmer Amberger, now the colleagues from ZDF are reporting that he, like Currie, who was previously considered a co-favourite, did not start at short notice.

18:48

Blummenfelt is doing well

Incidentally, the top favorite Blummenfelt is still in the top group. Swimming is actually the Norwegian’s weakest discipline.

18:43

Anger is ahead

Almost half of the swim is over and as always in the water it is a bit confusing: Angert is leading a larger group, Laidlow is also there. Lange is placed at regarding rank 20.

18:40

The best swimmers in the field

If we take the last Hawaii years as a basis, then Amberger should be the first to get out of the water once more. Also strong swimmers are the Australian Appleton, the German Angert and the Frenchman Sam Laidlow.

18:36

A total of five Germans in the race

In addition to Lange and Kienle, Florian Angert, Maurice Clavel and Andreas Dreitz also represent the German colors.

18:32

The German hope for victory is long

In the absence of the injured Jan Frodeno, Patrick Lange should of course be mentioned. The 2017 and 2018 World Champion is still a favorite for the front but has been struggling with the stubborn following-effects of coronavirus this year. Sebastian Kienle, the third in the German triathlon triumvirate, also competes, but has recently not been able to compete at the top.

18:29

Young savages once morest veterans

All three Scandinavians are representatives of the new generation. The young wild ones will be challenged by a few experienced players, including Lionel Sanders from the USA and Braden Currie from New Zealand – and of course the Germans.

18:28

These are the favourites

Let’s take a look at the favourites: After the break, the Ironman world has fundamentally changed. While the Germans dominated in Hawaii in the years before the pandemic, others are now entering the race as favorites. Above all the Norwegian Kristian Blummenfelt, who only won the 2021 catch-up World Cup in Utah in May. However, the 28-year-old is a Hawaii debut and must first prove that he can master the special difficulty of the race on the Big Island. Other favorites besides Blummenfeldt are his compatriot Gustav Iden and the Dane Magnus Ditlev.
