Has the Renault 5 Turbo become an essential source of inspiration? A few days ago, the diamond manufacturer lifted the veil on the concept car Turbo 3E electric car to pay a final tribute to the fiftieth anniversary of its original 5 city car. A few months earlier, the Franco-American company Légende Automobiles presented its project ” Turbo 3 », a modern version of the Renault 5 Turbo designed on the basis of an R5 chassis converted to advanced technologies.
And now another very exciting R5 Turbo project is coming to the fore. This is a “restomod” initiated by Revolution Automobile in partnership with L2 Concept, a company specializing in the construction of concept cars (already author of the Renault Air4 unveiled last year) and the English of Melliard for the technical part. The idea? Starting from an original R5 Turbo chassis and improving it to all new ones to make it both more efficient and better finished, like the Porsches reviewed by Singer.
340 horsepower and a carbon fiber body
Revolution Automobile is counting on a 340 horsepower version of the original 4-cylinder overhead cylinder, thanks to an ultra-modern supercharging circuit and current technologies. This modern R5 Turbo would also feature full carbon fiber bodywork, completely reworked running gear and high-performance AP Racing brakes. Initiated in 2019, the project was frozen during the coronavirus crisis but its designers have already almost completed the conceptual phase. All that’s missing is a new investor for the project to come to an end. As for the Porsche Singer or the Lancia 037 of Kimera Carswe are talking regarding real exceptional cars: the preparation of this special R5 Turbo would cost more than 200,000€ without counting the original model.
