Gamestop storefronts may soon be history. The management wants to close all shops in Switzerland and lay off all employees.

Gamestop wants to give up the physical store and close it by the end of May 2023.
-
As a result, more than 80 employees will probably lose their jobs.
-
The management has now informed the workforce regarding their plans in a letter.
Gamestop apparently pulls the emergency brake in Switzerland. In an internal letter, which is available within 20 minutes, the employees of the Swiss branches are informed regarding a consultation procedure for a mass redundancy according to OR Art. 335f.
The management writes: “Gamestop Switzerland intends to give up business throughout Switzerland for strategic reasons.” Physical shops are no longer profitable and the trend towards download and streaming offers can no longer be averted. To date, Gamestop has not responded to a 20 minute request.
83 employees will probably lose their jobs
Specifically, it is planned to close the 14 shops between January and the end of May 2023. According to a list, 83 employees will be made redundant. These are all employees. Only one IT employee would continue to be employed, as the letter says.
The management plans to announce the terminations at the end of October – at the earliest possible date. In individual cases, however, this might be extended depending on the closing date of the relevant branch.
In the event of a mass redundancy, the law requires employees to be informed in advance. In addition, the employer must give employees the opportunity to make suggestions as to how a wave of layoffs might be averted. Management promises to carefully consider all suggestions.
