According to historical records, at 10:55 am that day, that unequal naval clash began. The Chilean Cochrane and Blanco Encalada armored cars prevailed over the brave Huáscar monitor. The Peruvian ship fought for more than an hour in the Battle of Angamos.

That day Rear Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario died heroically, as well as First Lieutenant Diego Ferré, Lieutenant Commander Elías Aguirre and Lieutenant Melitón Rodríguez, among other heroes who sailed along with the Huáscar.

Why is Grau considered a national hero and a hero of the Peruvian Navy? Because Despite the material superiority of the enemy, Grau decided to fight instead of fleeing to Arica, an option that might be executed as it was faster than the large southern armored vehicles. Being captured, the monitor sealed her intervention in the Pacific War (1879-1883).
