The members of the federal government are paid up to 250,489 euros gross per year. In a context where energy prices are reaching peaks and weighing heavily on the wallets of Belgian households, the Prime Minister wishes to set up a crisis contribution from them.
In fact, the ministers would reduce their salaries by 8%, which should make it possible to recover around 20,000 euros per minister, i.e. 450,000 euros in total in 2023. There is also a question of extending the efforts of the institutions benefiting from an endowment and political parties and relaunch the economy by 1.11% for 2023 and 2024. This operation should bring in 370,000 euros.
Moreover, Het Belang van Limburg adds that Deputy Prime Minister Petra de Sutter is pushing for the salary supplement and time credit benefits to be reduced as well.
Our colleagues from Le Soir also affirm that Alexander De Croo is aiming for “a status that is as uniform as possible for the various assemblies in the country”. This salary reduction might thus not only concern the federal level. The President of the Chamber might implement a global consultation in this regard.
The budgets allocated to party grants might therefore be frozen at the level of September 2022. The expected envelope would thus reach €1,998,000.
