GISMETEO: Hubble and Webb telescopes captured the “explosion” of the asteroid Dimorph after it was rammed by the DART probe – Science and space

The Hubble and Webb space observatories carried out observations of the process of ramming the Dimorph asteroid with the DART probe. The footage was posted on the Webb portal.

In the photographs, you can see the ejection of a huge amount of debris and dust. He provoked a significant increase in the brightness of the Dimorph by creating a halo illuminated by the Sun. Hubble filmed with a camera WFC3 in the optical range, “Webb” – camera NIRCam, which operates in the near IF range. Thanks to the devices of these devices, it becomes possible to determine the substances that make up this dust and the size of its particles.

The telescopes were able to capture the appearance of plumes of asteroid material that radiated from Dimorph following the impact, and a 3-fold strong increase in its brightness due to the ram, which persisted for 8 hours following the impact.

Telescopic observation will continue for regarding another thirty days to follow the effects of the impact in dynamics.
