Existing on Android for more than three years, reverse charging technology is being considered in Cupertino.
It seems a long time ago when Apple acted as a precursor in the field of new technologies. Instead, for several years, the Cupertino giant has preferred to deploy new features when it is sure they are ready, even if it means being well behind the competition.
Since the end of 2018, or even 2019, many smartphones running Android have enabled the reverse charging function. Totally unknown to the battalion for iOS aficionados, reverse charging allows you to charge a phone using another smartphone. Rather practical when we run out of battery and our loved ones are generous.
Apple had, until today, obviously never heard of this technology. In a patent called “Magnetic Alignment System for Wireless Power Devices” and filed with the USPTO on September 29, Apple describes a technology allowing “power to be transmitted wirelessly between electronic devices. Devices such as phones, wireless charging pads (MagSafe) and other equipment may have wireless power circuits.
In the patent, Apple explains how it intends to use the technology. Thus, she explains that “to align the first and second device for power transfer between their coils, the devices can be equipped with alignment magnets”. Apple would then exploit its MagSafe technology. Difficult however to know if the functionality will land on a brand new iPhone, or if it can be made available through an update.
