What if I change? Consciously facing emotions brings well-being and mental health

Avoiding crying is not the only way to escape, it is also when trying to calm pain, anxiety or sadness.

The daily work, personal projects, self-demand and the inability to manage emotions, stress and adversity make it difficult to enjoy inner well-being and affect mental health.

It is not necessary to suffer from great emotional events to feel overwhelmed. While it is true that the illness of oneself or loved ones, divorce, migration, financial bankruptcy or the death of someone special directly affects the emotional states and the physical and mental well-being of a person, it is the constant daily pressures that most negatively impact mental and emotional health; and on many occasions it is intended to avoid the internal stress that all these situations cause.

Various forms of evasion, greater internal conflict

One of the main ways to avoid what you feel is resistance to crying, however, crying is a way to vent and relieve sorrow.

Many people resist this, wanting to ignore, control, hide or disguise emotions such as sadness, anger, rage, pain or resentment, considering them unpleasant or negative. In many cases, this behavior responds to learning from childhood, where crying is related to weakness and consequently it was learned to repress and avoid emotions.

Avoiding crying is not the only way to escape, it is also when trying to calm pain, anxiety or sadness:

· Consuming more alcohol or drugs.

· Working longer, until exhaustion.

· Partying almost every day or week.

Smoking more than usual

· Increasing food intake.

· Showing more irritability, stress, nerves or anguish when they ask how you feel or see others express their feelings, which makes you withdraw from your family and friends.

· Losing attention and concentration, forgetting important matters.

· Avoiding interaction and becoming intimate with someone so as not to talk regarding what is happening to you.

· Shut up when something bothers you, so as not to generate conflict.

· Refusing the presence of negative or automatic thoughts, pretending that they do not exist, wanting to fill our mind with “positivism” or “optimism”, just to avoid fear, worry or anxiety.

All these forms are nothing more than temporary resources that are applied when you do not want to feel or make contact with yourself, without realizing that the more you avoid facing emotions, thoughts or behaviors, the more they take hold inside and the higher the level will be. of discomfort, discomfort and frustration, it is even the surest path to anxiety and depression.

It is just a delay of existential crises, whose consequences will not only be emotional, but also physical, mental and spiritual.

Gain inner well-being in the face of feelings and circumstances

It is proven that repressing emotions only leaves discomfort, illness and greater anxiety and depression. It is not a solution, it is a bigger problem, which at any moment will manifest itself physically, mentally and emotionally.

If you are within the spectrum of those who avoid their feelings, it is important that you begin to take steps towards your inner well-being and enrich your mental health, which will make you more productive, efficient and happy. Nothing like feeling inner peace and awareness of the present moment:

1. Practice self-care 24 hours a day: taking care of yourself is essential to regain mental, emotional and physical balance. This includes new eating habits, sleep hygiene, physical exercise, and inner connection.

2. Talk regarding what happens to you. It is always good to express to someone what you feel. A professional in psychology might help you overcome past traumas or wounds, with ethics, professionalism, without judgment or criticism.

3. Connect with the joy of living, gratitude and love, which are also emotions and feelings that heal the soul.

4. Be aware that emotions are just that, emotions. Sometimes they generate pleasure and other times displeasure. They are not bad or good, they just are. Recognize, manage and experience them consciously, fill with joy, peace and emotional freedom.

5. Express your emotions with tears or not. Remember that crying can be emotional, not only pain causes crying, joy also cries.

6. Bond emotionally with someone who generates confidence and security in you. Conscious emotional bonds establish strong and lasting, loyal and faithful relationships.

7. Recognize any manifestations of stress that you have and process them consciously and deliberately.

8. Take time to pause, breathe and flow. Meditation and Mindfulness are excellent options to calm the mind, achieve stillness and inner calm.

Expressing what we feel makes us free, connects us with our human nature and our divine essence. We just need to find the healthiest way to do it, in a trusted and controlled environment, with someone who generates security and affection for us.

Let us remember that, just as we learn to repress our emotions so as not to be seen as weak or vulnerable, we can also learn and enjoy the benefits of expressing what we feel.

Avoiding what we feel is not the solution, it is the problem!
