A good season in the NBA doesn’t just happen on the field. This also happens on the financial side! Bank management is fundamental to any NBA team, so it’s time to take a look at the Atlanta Hawks’ salaries for the 2022-23 season.

Financial situation in relation to the salary cap
- The Luxury Tax threshold is set at $150,267,000 this year.
- The NBA Salary Cap is set at $123,655,000 this year.
With $148,480,277 contractually committed for this 2022-23 seasonthe Atlanta Hawks will have to make roster-level choices if they don’t want to enter the Luxury Tax.
The front office has managed a few moves this summer, to significantly improve the workforce while offloading some troublesome contracts, including that of Danilo Gallinari, who received more than 20 million a year in Atlanta. With this cap space released, the Hawks signed Dejounte Murray for 33 million over two years and other players with lower salaries, which do not exceed 5 million dollars per year: Aaron Holiday and Frank Kaminsky, in particular. And that sounds like a good deal for Atlanta.
Players under guaranteed contracts for the 2023-24 season: 5
- Trae Young
- John Collins
- Clint Capela
- Dejounte Murray
- A.J. Griffin
Four incumbents out of five, $100 million between them, or two-thirds of the Hawks’ total payroll. It’s with this roster that Atlanta wants to win: we put everything on these guys and it’s going to have to pay off. AJ Griffin, he is a rookie and in the short term an extra player, who will already come off the bench for a few minutes here and there.
Three players to watch this season
The Serb earns 18 million per year and has a player option at the end of the season. Holder in half of the matches he played last season, we will have to monitor the evolution of his status. The Hawks may not be able to afford to lose a back-up capable of planting his 15 points every night off the bench, and even half the time being part of the starting 5. Nate McMillan may want to secure him by giving him more opportunities as a starter, especially in position 3, where he competes with De’Andre Hunter. Problem, he too is to be watched (we talk regarding it just following), since he will be a free agent in the summer. In position 2, the arrival of Dejounte Murray clearly dampens Bogdan Bogdanović’s hopes of playing time.
As we said above, De’Andre Hunter should fight with his teammate for a place in the starting five on the wing. His advantage over Bogdanović: age, since he is five years younger than the Serb. It is likely that the Hawks will give him priority, he will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season and will therefore have to show up to land a contract worth more than $10 million for the season. This duel between the two will prove to be a perilous situation for the franchise, especially since its payroll is very high. She may have to make a choice and keep only one to avoid entering the Luxury Tax. Which will chase the other? The answer may be in their name.
A team option awaits the contract of the American-Nigerian pivot at the end of the season. Back-up of the indestructible and triple paid Clint Capela, Onyeka Okongwu will want to show that he deserves his chance in Atlanta and to make a few million more per year. If his progress continues, there is little chance that it will not happen: from 12 minutes to 20, from 3 rebounds to 6, from 4 points to 8, everything has doubled for him, except his salary of course, between his first and his second season in Coca-Cola country. He will therefore have to avoid making pschitt and continue to take the bottle to curry favor with his front office. Hampered by injuries for several years, he has just experienced his first off season in good health. For, we hope, his first season with more than 50 games.
