La Candelaria Police Station was flooded and the detainees lost even their food

The hailstorm this Thursday, September 29, affected even the detainees of the La Candelaria Police Station, in the Center of Medellin. The Personería reported that the water leaked into the station and damaged mats and mattresses. In photos you can see the disaster: food bags float on the dark water. Some food was also lost.

The Personería was doing surveillance at the scene. Apparently, the sewers were saturated. Someone who was in the place told this medium that this situation caused the bathrooms to overflow, which poured the sewage water over the entire space.

The overflowing water, to top it off, reached the food they had for the detainees, spoiling it. Andrea Carvajal, representative (e) of the area of ​​​​penalty, family and coexistence, commented that the Personería, with the support of EPM, Medellín Firefighters and the Police, is trying to solve the difficult situation.

And it is that in itself the conditions are complex in the station. According to data from the Personería itself, today there are 214 people deprived of liberty there pending a court decision. Be supposed to the capacity is 75 people, that is, there is an overcrowding of 185%.

In police stations, due to overcrowding, there are constant fights that often end with injuries or even deaths. Inmates have to sleep on top of each other, smelling bad. Infectious diseases are frequent.

In addition to the flooding of the station, the city experienced several emergencies due to the hailstorm that fell following noon on September 29.

What was experienced in the metropolitan area this Thursday followingnoon was a tremendous storm: they fell 121 lightning strikes and winds of up to 45 kilometers per hour they bent trees and palm trees. Before the rain, the temperature was around 26 degrees and, despite the gray clouds, the sun was warm. After the storm and the winds, plus the enraged hail, it fell to 16 degrees. And it was not just perception: the Metropolitan Area declared that this was an “extreme precipitation” event, since between 45 and 60 millimeters of water fell.

As recorded by social networks, the downpour was accompanied by a lot of hail. Where more hail fell was at the stations of the SIATA Museo de Antioquía, Wind Radar Station – in the commune 16 Belén and Montañita de San Antonio de Prado.
