This is the first time in history that a Pope will visit Bahrain. After visiting Kazakhstan in early September, the Pope is visiting the Muslim-majority country of Bahrain.

During the four-day visit, he will also participate in a conference organized by the Bahrain Forum for Dialogue on East-West Human Coexistence. Vatican sources said more information regarding the visit would be released soon. In 2014, King Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa of Bahrain visited the Vatican. Pope Francis visited the UAE in 2019, his first visit to the Middle East. On that day, he signed the Catholic-Muslim Cooperation Document for World Peace with the Chief Imam of Al Azhar.

About 80,000 Christians live in Bahrain, where regarding 70 percent are Muslims. Most of them are foreigners from India and the Philippines. The ‘Our Lady of Arabia’ Cathedral was inaugurated in December last year in Bahrain to provide prayer facilities for them. The largest Christian church in the Arabian Peninsula is located in the city of Awali, 20 kilometers from Manama. Archbishop Eugene Nugent, Apostolic Nuncio to Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, Bishop Paul Hinder, Vicar Head of Southern Arabia, and others participated in the opening ceremony of the cathedral, which can accommodate 2,300 worshippers.
