The four-day joint South Korea-U.S. joint exercise with the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier ended today.
Tomorrow, the South Korea-U.S.-Japan trilateral joint exercise involving even the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force will be held in the East Sea for the first time in five years.
Although it is intended to jointly respond to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threat, some analysts say that Japan’s calculations may be different.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan sails through the East Sea.
The Korean Navy’s Gwanggaeto the Great and the Aegis destroyer Seoaeryu Seongryong are escorted by them.
The ROK-U.S. combined exercise ends today, but tomorrow a trilateral joint exercise in which even the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force participated will be held.
Korea-US-Japan joint exercise for the first time in five years since 2017.
The training location is on the high seas, more than 150 kilometers east of Dokdo.
The destroyer Munmu the Great of the South Korean navy and the nuclear carrier ‘Ronald Reagan’ from the United States will participate, and the destroyer Asahi from Japan will join.
This is a 2018 Indian-style scene where the Japanese self-defense force’s Asahi is the latest ship equipped with a submarine periscope detection radar.
The South Korean military also said that the main purpose of this exercise is to develop the ability to detect North Korean submarines equipped with submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
However, as the training is held for the first time in five years, the meaning given by each country seems to be greater.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) announced that it would conduct exercises in the Sea of Japan to “realize a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
It acknowledged the purpose of checking China in the Indo-Pacific, and it seems to have taken into account the recent situation in which Chinese intelligence vessels are entering the waters of Japan.

“We are trying to develop military capabilities, but basically, what is the reason Japan wants to develop this? In the end, it is basically a public check.”
It is predicted that there will be consequences if the exercise is conducted while not only diplomatic issues such as the lifting of Japan’s economic sanctions and the issue of forced labor, but also military conflicts such as the ‘patrol plane incident’ have not been resolved.
