How to apply for the immigrant visa for the United States?

The immigrant visa It is granted to foreign citizens whose purpose is to live permanently in the USA.

According to the US Embassy in Colombia, “Foreign citizens who intend to immigrate or permanently reside in the United States must follow specific procedures in order to apply for an immigrant visa (…) If admitted, have the right to live and work permanently in the United States”.

How to apply for an immigrant visa?

Please note that to apply for an immigrant visa, the foreign national generally must be sponsored by a United States citizen, lawful permanent resident, or prospective US employer.

The request must be made by the sponsor on behalf of the foreign citizen with the United States Citizenship and Immigration ServicesUSCIS.

Once the USCIS approve your request, you will receive a notification indicating that your request has been forwarded to National Visa Center, NVC, with whom you should complete the process.

It should be noted that there are different types of immigrant visas, including:

  • Spouse of a US citizen
  • Engaged to marry a US citizen and live in the US
  • Family members of US citizens and/or legal permanent residents in the US
  • Employment Immigrants
  • International Adoption of Orphaned Children by United States Citizens

You will then receive an email with instructions on the date of your interview. In addition, you will need to register with the mail service to have the documents returned to you and create a new account.
