South Korea says cancer is still the top cause of death in 2021

The report said the number of cancer deaths was 161.1 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2021, an increase of 0.6 percent from 2020, making it the No. 1 cause of death since relevant data were collected in 1983.

Cancer death data shows a lung cancer death rate of 36.8 deaths per 100,000 population, the highest among cancer deaths. This was followed by 20.0 liver cancer, 17.5 colon cancer, 14.1 stomach cancer, and 13.5 pancreatic cancer.

The second leading cause of death in 2021 is heart disease, with a mortality rate of 61.5 per 100,000 inhabitants, while pneumonia is the third leading cause of death. which has a mortality rate of 44.4 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The top three causes of death accounted for 43.1% of all deaths last year, down 1.8 percentage points from the previous year. The remaining top 10 causes of death were strokes. It has 44 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, 17.5 diabetes, 15.6 Alzheimer’s disease, 13.9 liver disease, 12.5 blood infections and 12.1 high blood pressure.

The number of deaths from suicide is 26 per 100,000 inhabitants, ranks fifth in the leading cause of death in 2021 and up from 25.7 in 2020, with suicide the number one cause of death. among adolescents and those in their 20s and 30s last year
