[스포티비뉴스=박성윤 기자] Toronto Blue Jays Ryu Hyun-jin completed 10 years of MLB service time.
On the 27th (Korean time), Ryu Hyun-jin’s US agent Bora Corporation wrote on his SNS account, “Congratulations on achieving 10 years of service time for Ryu Hyun-jin.”
Service time is the length of time a player has played in the major leagues. One season is recognized for completing 172 days. It starts on the opening day and includes rest days. If you’re on the injured list or on the MLB roster even if you don’t play, it counts.
Ryu Hyun-jin became the third player to fill 10 years of service time following Park Chan-ho and Choo Shin-soo. Park Chan-ho spent 14 years and 50 days in the major leagues, and Choo Shin-soo 13 years and 119 days in the major leagues. At the end of 10 years, you receive the highest MLB pension.
If you start receiving your pension at age 45, you receive $67,776 annually. Converted to 1,425 won as of the 26th, that is 96.58 million won per year. At age 62, you receive $215,000 per year. Received 36.37 million won per year.
Ryu Hyun-jin completed 10 years following many twists and turns with injuries big and small. He underwent shoulder and net surgery, and had two elbow surgeries. In his 2013 debut season, he played full-time, but failed to throw any regulation innings from 2014 to 2018. He had surgery and he took a break in 2015 with barrels and only played one game in 2016.
Prior to the 2019 free agent (FA), he started in 29 games and threw 182⅔ innings, recording a 14-5 ERA of 2.32, and finished second in the National League Cy Young voting. He also received first place votes. As a free agent, he signed a four-year, $80 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. He plays as the ace of 2020 and was voted 3rd in the Cy Video poll.
He recorded 14-10 in 2021, but was sluggish with an ERA of 4.37. He struggled with a downtrend in 2022, but he developed pain in his left arm and decided to undergo Tommy John surgery and was out of the season. His all-time major league record is 75–45, one save, 1003⅓ pitched innings, and a 3.27 ERA.
