Purpose of ‘non-recognition of Russia merger’… There is no possibility of adoption due to Russian veto rights
The United States condemned the referendum held in Russia’s occupied territory in Ukraine at the UN Security Council level and decided to push for a resolution not to recognize it.
Archyde.com reported on the 27th (local time) that US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has decided to submit a resolution to the Security Council.
Russia has held referendums for five days in four regions, including Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) in eastern Ukraine, and Zaporiza and Kherson Oblasts in eastern Ukraine starting on the 23rd.
Russia is planning to formally declare these regions as its territory through a referendum, but Ukraine and Western countries have declared the vote a ‘fake ballot’ and will not recognize the results.
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan previously criticized the referendum as “an insult to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, which are the foundation of the international system and the core of the Charter of the United Nations.”
The resolution prepared by Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield is also expected to include criticism of the illegality and procedural problems of the Russian referendum.
It was also reported that the annexation of Ukrainian territory to Russia would be unacceptable, along with a request for an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops.
However, since Russia, a party to the Security Council, is a permanent member of the Security Council with veto right, it is unlikely that the resolution submitted by the United States will be adopted.
In fact, even at an emergency meeting of the Security Council convened shortly following Russia invaded Ukraine, the adoption of a resolution condemning the U.S. submitted was canceled due to Russia’s exercise of veto power.
