Orioles overwhelm Boston 14-8, reduce distance to wild card

Cedric Mullins homered on the second pitch of the game, Anthony Santander homered twice and the Baltimore Orioles crushed the Boston Red Sox 14-8 on Monday night to gain ground in the postseason race.

Gunner Henderson hit a two-run homer and Mullins drove in two runs with a triple for Baltimore (80-73), which pulled within 3 1/2 games of rested Seattle in the AL wild-card race.

Austin Hays hit a solo shot for the Orioles in a game that was delayed an hour and 40 minutes by rain.

Rob Refsnyder hit a three-run homer and JD Martinez a solo shot for the bottom-seeded Red Sox (72-81) who suffered their sixth straight loss, their worst of the year.

Spencer Watkins (5-6) got the win going 4 1/3 innings in relief and Connor Seabold (0-4) took the loss.

For the Orioles, Venezuelans Anthony Santander 6-2, with two runs scored and three RBIs; Rougned Odor 5-2, with one run scored and one produced. Dominican Jorge Mateo 4-1, with a run scored and an RBI.

For the Red Sox, Puerto Rican Kiké Hernández 5-2, with one run scored and three RBIs. The Dominicans Rafael Devers 5-3, with an RBI; Abraham Almonte 4-2.
