French Days – The Nikon D780 “5-star” camera body at €2,052.27 (-14%)

The D780 full-frame SLR was presented by Nikon at CES 2020. Spiritual son of the D850 and the Z6 hybrid, it presents itself as a very versatile device. Here is the verdict of our detailed test…

As much to say right away, the Nikon D780 full-frame SLR is an excellent body. Obviously, its good tropicalized construction, its ergonomics associated with a number of customization options and its quality optical sight make it a good candidate for SLR enthusiasts. However, the D780 disappoints on certain points, such as its burst mode or its management of highlights. However, the evolutions are present since the D750, with in particular a very effective autofocus and a mode liveview finally usable. Nikon has not forgotten the video either, not extravagant, but which will satisfy most users. The D780 SLR deserves its place as a versatile camera in Nikon’s range.

NB: The reported price drop is calculated by comparing the lowest price of the day with the average of the lowest prices charged by all merchants for the product last month, with security rules to exclude prices from shops whose the VAT policy is not clear (known as “grey” shops, typically in the case of imports from China).

An alternative

With the EOS 90D, Canon signs a beautiful evolution of theEOS 80D and the progress is not negligible. We can count for example on a fast autofocus, effective face detection or on a construction designed to withstand bad weather. Of course, the increase in the number of pixels is not to be forgotten. Despite everything, some shortcomings are clearly felt, especially in terms of the quality of the JPEGs or the increase in sensitivity that might be improved. 4K/UHD brings with it advantages, but is also a little timid in terms of quality. Finally, the real strength of the EOS 90D lies in its very successful reflex positioning which will appeal to aficionados of optical sighting. The ergonomics are very good and the case seems ready to accompany you everywhere.
