During his speech at the Distinguished Cities Projects Forum and Exhibition, held in Riyadh, the Mayor of Jeddah Governorate, Saleh Al-Turki, compared urban growth in Jeddah and Riyadh, saying that urban growth in Riyadh was planned and rapid, and did not result in slums, unlike what happened in Jeddah.
Al-Turki explained that the emergence of slums in Jeddah is due to the fact that urban growth was unplanned or uncontrolled, due to the fact that it attracted communities of expatriate workers, and some shortcomings in housing programs, which made the state allow the provision of services to slum areas.
He added that some gangs and some residents of Jeddah took lands and cut them off and sold them in random ways, which made these areas far from the urban identity of Jeddah, stressing that the state looked at these places with a humanitarian view, considering that their areas of residence lack some facilities, while giving them a deadline to submit title deeds to prove ownership during a specified period of time.
Al-Amin stressed that there is no country in the world that allows people to seize lands, whether it is state lands or citizens’ lands.
