The 37 year old Kenyan had already established the previous brand (2h01’39”) on the flat course of the German captain, in September 2018. He has now won 17 out of the 19 marathons he has run.

Eliud Kipchoge started on an ultra-fast basis, passing in 59’51” at the halfway point, much faster than during his 2018 record (1h01’06”). He might not keep up this pace, which would have allowed him to go under 2 hours, but did not miss the opportunity to strike a new blow.
