The Ombudsman’s Office of Panama assured this Friday that the number of migrants, including Venezuelans, who cross the Darién area equals that of last year, which stood at 133,726 irregular migrants in transit to North America.
“As of today, the figures equal the same number (of travelers) at the end of 2021,” the ombudsman said in a statement.
According to data from the National Migration Service (SNM), as of Thursday at 6:30 local time, a total of 132,153 irregular migrants had entered Panama through the Darién route.
Only on Thursday “2,416 migrants entered, mostly Venezuelans, Haitians, Ecuadorians and Colombians,” the statement said, emphasizing that Panama “is the only country that keeps statistics or biometric figures by which the number of migrants is known. enter the national territory.
While last year the vast majority of irregular migrants were Haitians, this 2022 Venezuelans are the ones who cross the most – 80,000 so far this year according to the National Migration Service (Senafront) – all bound for North America, especially the United States.
Panama welcomes irregular travelers in migratory reception stations (ERM) located on its border with Colombia (south) and Costa Rica (north), where they take their biometric data and receive food and medical care, in a unique operation in the region that consumes millions of dollars annually, as the government said.
