There are bad games and there are those that must be handled with care. Console breakers and other backup erasers are numerous in the video game landscape. So watch out for these 9 games that sometimes have the worst in store for you!
Age of Empires is a well-known franchise. Rather identified as PC, it even managed to win over console players and in particular those from Nintendo. They were indeed numerous to welcome in a positive way the arrival of the license on Nintendo DS in 2006. This port of the first opus, Age of Empires : The Age of Kings, is fairly well received by players and critics, but a devastating bug will ruin everything. Corrupt saves, framerate drops, freeze… What make you want to simply reboot the game, right? Well by doing this, you might say goodbye to your cartridge, which had become irreparably unusable. A situation all the more infuriating that this bug might be avoided. It was enough to name his empire with a name containing more than four letters, quite simply.

You might be tempted to believe that modern consoles are far too powerful to be knocked out by a simple game. A very recent example proved the opposite: Alien game. Anthem isn’t exactly a game with a good reputation. It greatly tarnished the reputation of BioWare and will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the biggest failures in the video game world. Some players will even have a particularly bad memory of it, since this game broke their PS4. Many have complained regarding this on EA’s official support forums. After being forced to restart their PS4, players found themselves faced with a particularly slow console and checking all the files one by one before launching (as normally happens following a critical error). Some even claimed that their console had simply stopped working or that their hard drive had fried. If the problem was not widespread (even raising some doubts), it was still important enough for Sony to decide to compensate some of the players concerned.

The disaster took place in the level Castle Crush. A glitch concerning the first barrel of the latter might purely and simply destroy your game cartridge. The glitch is the following: smash a barrel once morest a wall but while making the game believe that you still hold it in your hands. If you were lucky, this inconsistency “only” crashed your game before erasing all your saves. On the other hand, if the latter turned out to be too corrupt, it then became impossible to launch the game…
3ds
Do you know the passwords? Ancestors of our backups, they notably allowed direct access to certain levels of our favorite games. Metroid used these famous passwords at the time. In addition to this backup side, some allowed you to increase your skills or discover the game a little differently (fans of the password JUSTIN BAILEY, we see you). If some, like the one just mentioned, have become particularly famous, it is not always for the right reasons. ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER FUCKER, by triggering improbable data, would simply crash your game. A funny little spade from the developers? Well, that depends on your console. On Nintendo 3DS, entering this password might corrupt the system, forcing you to completely reset it and lose all your data in the process.
WiiU
Mighty No. 9 was a title awaited by fans of Mega Man and other games of the genre. The latter had even massively financed the title, eager for them to see the light of day. But the unofficial revival of the Mega Man series proved particularly disappointing upon release. As you can imagine, we would have preferred it to be his only fault. Unfortunately, the Wii U version was a real nightmare for many gamers. In addition to framerate drops and other technical issues, Mighty No. 9 had two glitch quite easily achievable (related to the basic mechanics of the game) and capable of totally corrupting the system of your Wii U, with all the loss and despair that entails…

Before working on Halo and Destiny, Bungie got its hands on a now almost forgotten license: Myth. At the time, however, its heroic fantasy universe, its 3D aesthetics and its tactical side had pleased players, even justifying the development of a second opus. Yes, but here it is, the latter arrived with one of the most significant bugs. He might indeed erase, not just your backups, but your entire hard drive. And to launch this terrible curse, it was enough to uninstall the game from the main root folder of its hard drive, which is still quite common. Fortunately, Bungie managed to save the furniture. Realizing the bug just before the release of the title, the studio had the discs recalled and exchanged them in extremis with a corrected version. In its early days, Ubisoft dabbled in all kinds of games, for better or for worse. In 2001, it was unfortunately rather towards the worst that the French publisher headed with its role-playing game in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, Pool of Radiance : Ruins of Myth Drannor. At the time, the game had received a timid 13 out of 20 in our columns, but that’s not the most embarrassing. The save system was indeed spending its time corrupting yours as soon as you closed the game. Worse still, uninstalling the game would cause you to lose all of your other installed titles and even the rest of your hard drive. Finally, the bugs that we tend to often point out today in certain Ubisoft games are not so disturbing in comparison.

Game demos on disc… A time that is now over and yet made many players happy. Their mere mention will no doubt awaken fond memories in some of you. But maybe others will remember far less pleasant moments. In 2004, a demo disc for PlayStation 2 in particular wreaked havoc: that of Viewtiful Joe 2.
