The mayor of Barranquilla, Jaime Pumarejo, in an interview with Blu Radio, revealed that the
possibility of a Formula 1 race
takes place in the city is on the right track. In fact, the official noted that the race would be called the Caribbean Grand Prix.
The mayor also said that, if all goes well, in 2024 the city will havewould be the first Formula 1 event.
“What we can say is that the process is going very well. Progress has been made in all the previous steps, before a final decision. They have already come to the city, they have found it comfortable, ”she said.
Mayor Pumarejo stated that the award for Formula 1 in Barranquilla would be very different from the others and revealed the reasons. “The climate change effort that we are making in the city, It would be one of the most important points of this grand prix”.
“The award would be self-sustaining, that is, the development of the career would not cost the country and to the city, but, on the contrary, it would bring employment, tourism and recognition”, he added.
The mayor mentioned that there are already two routes identified, both are approved, and that it is regarding street routes, semi-urban.
“In one of the routes the river is the protagonist, in another it is not, but both are in the metropolitan area from Barranquilla. We hope that, if everything that is missing is finalized, we might be talking regarding 2024 or 2025 and it would be signed for 10 years,” the mayor revealed in Mañanas Blu.
Regarding the name, the mayor stated that it will be called the Grand Prix of the Caribe de Formula and, in terms of the number of attendees, there would be 120,000 spectators daily.
“It would be the event with the highest billing in all of Colombia. A Formula 1 Grand Prix invoices in two or three days 2.5 times what Corferias invoices throughout the year”, added the official.
