Biden’s comments were also the clearest in his commitment to US military intervention. causing the White House to issue a statement clarifying that The US will not change its official policy not to carry out military operations on the island of Taiwan.
“The president of the United States has said it before. including in Tokyo in May this year. and clarified that the US Taiwan policy has not changed which is still true,” the White House said.
It is the third time President Biden has commented on Taiwan beyond the US official standpoint since October last year, which was the first time. And the next time was in May this year in Japan during his first visit to Asia as president. This prompted the White House to make a statement defending that US policy on Taiwan would not change either.
The US policy on Taiwan has always been strategically ambiguous. which did not pledge to protect Taiwan but did not rule out such alternatives as well.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said: Biden’s latest comments severely violate a key US pledge to not support Taiwan’s independence. And it sent a serious mistake to Taiwan’s separatist forces.
“We are willing to make the most sincere efforts towards peaceful reunification. At the same time, we will not tolerate any activity. aimed at separating the country and reserve the option to take all necessary measures,” a foreign ministry spokesman said.
However, Biden reiterated in an interview that The US does not support Taiwan’s independence. “There is a one-China policy and Taiwan decides its own independence. we are not moving does not support Taiwan independence That is their decision (Taiwan).”
Taiwan’s foreign ministry remarked on Mr Biden’s latest comments. They welcomed the US government’s security commitments to Taiwan. and will continue to strengthen its close security partnership with the US government.
