Today, Saturday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received the credentials of 13 new ambassadors to a number of countries, including a new ambassador to Ethiopia, regarding a year following the Ethiopian government decided to close its embassy in Cairo as part of an austerity plan that included closing and suspending the work of many of its embassies around the world.
According to Presidency Spokesman Bassam Radi, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received the credentials of Ambassador Hassan Ibrahim Musa, the ambassador of the United Federal Republic of Ethiopia to Egypt.
And last September, the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry announced the suspension of work in 31 of its embassies and the reduction of the number of diplomats in the embassies of a number of other countries around the world in order to reduce costs, following which the Ethiopian ambassador in Cairo, Marcos Tekleli, left the country.
And last June, Ethiopian media reported that the former general in the Ethiopian army, Hassan Ibrahim Musa, was appointed as the new ambassador of Ethiopia to Egypt.
According to the media, Musa held a high position in the Ethiopian army, and was the commander of the United Nations force “UNICEF” in the disputed Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan during 2016 and 2017.
Although diplomatic relations exist between Egypt and Ethiopia, there is a sharp dispute between the two countries over the rules for filling and operating the Renaissance Dam that Ethiopia is building on the Nile River, and Egypt and Sudan believe that it will harm their shares of water and their national security.
In early August, Ethiopia announced that it had completed the third filling of the dam, a move that Egypt rejected, and submitted a complaint to the Security Council to object to it.
