The two arch-rivals met for the first time in the ring in 2017, and fought to end the match in a draw, a result that aroused great controversy.
In the 2018 rematch, Alvarez won points in a much more contentious bout that many observers thought might have worked in the opponent’s favour.

Alvarez did not leave room for the division of opinions this time and dominated in most of the confrontation periods and was more quick to shoot punches and excelled by 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113, putting Golovkin’s future in boxing at stake.
The victory came in perfect timing for Alvarez, 32, following only losing his second career in the previous bout to light heavyweight champion Dmitri Bevol in May.
