– A hoped-for annual dialogue between Switzerland and the United States
After a first meeting, last October in Bern, Switzerland and the United States expressed the wish on Friday to continue their strategic partnership.
Switzerland and the United States want to continue their strategic partnership in the form of an annual dialogue. FDFA State Secretary Livia Leu signed a memorandum of understanding to this effect in Washington on Friday. This declaration of intent represents a “significant milestone” with one of Switzerland’s main partners in many areas, Livia Leu tweeted on Friday evening.
The diplomat met in the United States with Assistant Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman, on the occasion of the second strategic partnership dialogue. They notably addressed the geopolitical situation, the war in Ukraine, as well as bilateral relations between the two countries, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs said in a press release on Friday evening.
Cooperation
During the first meeting of this type, last October in Bern, the two countries had notably set as an objective, in addition to the strengthening of bilateral relations, cooperation between the two countries in international forums. On Friday, the two delegations discussed, for example, the protective power mandate that Switzerland exercises for the United States in Iran.
The major global challenges such as the fight once morest global warming, the promotion of democracy and international law were also mentioned. The war in Ukraine, its global consequences and the upcoming reconstruction process (follow-up to Lugano) were also on the list of topics discussed.
Switzerland once more presented the preparation work for its non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2023-2024. A subject of great interest for the United States, a permanent member of the Council, according to the FDFA.
