A national strike by air traffic controllers has been severely disrupting traffic on Friday, September 16 since 6 a.m. At Paris-Beauvais airport, in the Oise, only 20% of flights are operated. The strikers are demanding wage increases and a recruitment plan.
The 14,000 passengers deprived of their plane having been warned in advance, Beauvais airport was almost empty on Friday. Some flights still left in the morning and a plane will take off on Friday evening.
The National Union of Air Traffic Controllers (SNCTA), which launched the movement, is requesting two measures from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) and the public authorities. In a statementthe majority union demands on the one hand to rebalance the remuneration “in view of record inflation” and, on the other hand, to plan new recruitments.
“While the revenue is there because the compensation for inflation is provided for in the European performance plans, the absence of a rise in wages is unjustifiable!”, rebels the union in a tract.
“In 2029-2035, a third of the corps retires”, or 1,200 air traffic controllers, recalls the SNCTA. The complete training of an air traffic controller for five years, it is necessary to guarantee recruitment from 2023, according to the union which fears the consequences “inevitable in terms of the level of public service, working conditions and mobility”.
The SNCTA filed a second strike notice of 3 days, from September 28 to September 30, 2022.
