LR Mattle: “Around 44 million euros for Tyrol from the federal government’s second broadband billion”

59 Tyrolean communities are expanding and benefiting from the early federal funds

  • An investment volume of over 100 million euros is triggered – securing and creating numerous jobs
  • The state of Tyrol has been expanding fast internet since 2014

Due to the fact that the federal and state broadband subsidies are very well received, the federal government prefers 300 million in subsidies as part of the second broadband billion in order to support the federal states and municipalities in broadband expansion even faster. For Tyrol, this means that around 44 million euros are available from the federal government this year for the expansion of fast Internet to the front door. The state of Tyrol relieves the municipalities once more with a follow-up subsidy to such federal subsidies in the amount of ten percent. Tyrol’s Digitization Provincial Council Anton Mattle presented today, Friday, together with State Secretary for Digitization and Telecommunications Florian Tursky the investment boost. The funds are available in addition to the support from the state – by 2023 100 million euros will have been invested in the expansion of fast internet in Tyrol. In concrete terms, expansion projects can be implemented even more quickly in 59 communities. After Vienna and Vorarlberg, Tyrol currently has the third-best supply rate of households with ultra-fast at 68 percent or. Gigabit-enabled Internet (1,000 Mbit/s). This makes Tyrol one of the frontrunners in digitization and broadband expansion.

“Especially in the past two years, many people have become even more aware of how important stable and high-performance Internet access is through home office or the digitization of services and official services,” emphasizes LR Mattle also that “ultra-fast internet is the basis for a modern living space. It is an impetus for maintaining and locating businesses in the Tyrol as a business location and helps to create jobs in the regions.” The federal funds alone from the first “funding call” for the second broadband billion that has now been brought forward will result in an investment volume of over 100 million in Tyrol Euro triggered: “Ultimately, Tyrol’s citizens as well as work and business location benefit from it. My thanks also go to State Secretary Florian Tursky, who recognizes the signs of the times and is committed to the rapid provision of funds. We are thus once once more igniting a turbocharger in broadband expansion,” he said LR Mattle.

Broadband expansion essential for business location

In 2022 alone, the federal government will provide a total of 900 million euros for the expansion of broadband throughout Austria. “As the federal government, we have set ourselves the ambitious goal of providing the whole of Austria with fixed and mobile gigabit connections nationwide by 2030. In order to achieve this goal and take advantage of the digitization push, we are bringing forward EUR 300 million this year and are therefore investing EUR 900 million in broadband expansion this year. There has never been so much money for broadband expansion. With a good digital infrastructure, we can create equal opportunities in the regions and make better use of the opportunities offered by digitization in order to be among the digitization winners at the end of the day. This is particularly important for Tyrol with its rural structure: All Tyroleans should have reliable and efficient Internet access, regardless of where they live,” said State Secretary Tursky. 80.2 million euros have already flowed to Tyrol from the federal government’s first broadband billion. This supplied 46,400 households.

A total of 183 Tyrolean municipalities and 21 planning associations are currently broadband municipalities. “We have been pursuing the federal government’s goal of implementing nationwide fiber optic expansion in Tyrol since 2013 and have also drawn up our own broadband master plan for this purpose,” hebs LR Mattle out.

About the broadband expansion in Tyrol

Since 2014, the state of Tyrol has been supporting the Tyrolean communities with the creation of the local fiber optic infrastructure with ten million euros annually. The state of Tyrol alone is making a total of 100 million euros available by 2023 for the expansion of nationwide fiber optic networks. As part of the economic offensive, a further ten million euros were added for digitization and broadband expansion. The data lines that have been set up are made available to operators by the municipalities. As a result, end customers are no longer tied to one operator and can choose independently.

“Thanks to our consistent approach, the Tyrolean communities are at the forefront in national comparison when it comes to broadband,” says LR Mattle and continues to invite communities to pick up state and federal funds and submit projects. The next federal funding tenders will begin in early 2023. “The municipalities are strong and indispensable partners in broadband expansion. Together we are getting closer to nationwide broadband coverage every day.”
