We are building the first steam cracker that operates on electricity instead of gas

The Vice President for Energy Efficiency and Carbon Management at SABIC, Dr. Fahad Al-Shrihi, spoke regarding the first technology of its kind in the world, which will adopt SABIC and will focus on electricity produced from renewable energy in steam cracking units.

Al-Sheraihi added in an interview with Al-Arabiya, that caster It is working to create the first steam cracking unit that operates on electricity instead of gas.

He pointed out that steam crackers are responsible for 25% of emissions in the petrochemical industry.

Al-Sharihi stated that SABIC, BASF and Lindy are partners in the new technology, pointing out that the new steam cracker unit will depend on electricity produced from renewable energy.

And he indicated that SABIC is expanding by introducing alternative energy in its factories, explaining that the new technology operating with renewable energy will reduce 90% of emissions.

Al-Sheraihi stated that the electricity will replace the gas in the operation of the steam cracking units, and the gas will be used to produce new materials and reduce emissions.

He pointed to the start of the experiment of the new technology in the third quarter of 2023 for a period of 4 years, indicating that the start of commercial production of this technology when its success is proven at any time.
