In recent months, 12 cases of meningococcal B linked to a new variant have been detected in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
The people concerned were mostly between the ages of 16 and 21 and attended the Chambery sector and an area of East Lyon. In view of this situation, the ARS has defined, in conjunction with a group of experts, the preventive actions to be carried out, knowing that the vaccine is the only effective way to prevent meningococcus B and its consequences.
Invasive meningococcal disease: symptoms and health risks
Invasive meningococcal infections (IMD), including IIM B, are infections caused by bacteria present in the throat.
This disease is transmits person to person through close contact (coughing, sneezing, kissing) or extended (More than an hour). These bacteria are less contagious than winter viruses (colds, flu, etc.) because they do not survive in the external environment (air, objects, etc.).
In general, meningococci do not cause particular diseases, but in some cases they can cause very serious illnesses such as meningitis or septicemia.
- 10% to 20% sequelae that can be disabling
- 10% to 12% observed deaths among observed cases
The disease is most often manifested by the following signs: fever, severe headache, often accompanied by vomiting.
Two symptoms should particularly alert you:
- a poorly tolerated high fever,
- and/or one or more rapidly appearing red or purplish spots (purpura).
If these symptoms appear, quickly contact the 15.
