An Italian-American study showed that eating whole tomatoes can slow the growth of stomach cancer cells and help prevent disease.
The study was conducted by researchers at the Oncology Research Center in Mirco Galliano in Italy, in cooperation with researchers at Temple University in the United States, and was published in the Journal of Cellular Physiology.
The researchers analyzed tomato extract to study its ability to treat various features of stomach cancer, and samples were taken from two types of tomatoes, “San Marzano” and “Corbarino”.
The results showed that both extracts limited the ability of cancer cells to spread and develop, in addition to the fact that the two extracts caused the death of cancer cells, and the researchers explained that the results did not stop at only prevention, but also paved the way for a new treatment.
“It appears that the effect of tomatoes is not related to specific components, such as lycopene, but rather tomatoes should be considered as a whole,” said lead researcher Daniela Baron of the Center for Oncology Research in Mirco Galliano in Italy.
According to the researchers, their findings suggest that whole tomatoes may be useful for preventing and treating stomach cancer.
