When and how is this diabetes detected?
In principle, a fasting blood sugar test is done: the first blood test recommended in early pregnancy. Then, between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy, the WHO recommends taking the OGTT test (oral glucose tolerance test).
This high blood sugar test has a bad reputation because you have to drink a very sweet and sickening syrup that sometimes causes nausea and vomiting. But it will make it possible to detect a type of diabetes in an affected patient. If the patient is diabetic, the doctor will refer her to an endocrinology consultation. The management will be multidisciplinary with a diabetologist and a nutritionist.
