Alex Albon, who developed appendicitis and missed the 16th round of F1 Italy GP, fell into respiratory failure following surgery at the hospital and was temporarily treated in the intensive care unit (ICU). Fortunately, he has now been transferred to a general ward and is expected to be discharged from the hospital on the 13th (Tuesday).
Albon was diagnosed with appendicitis (cecum) on the morning of Saturday, September 10, the day of qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix, and was admitted to the local San Gerardo Hospital for treatment. Laparoscopic surgery was performed that followingnoon.
According to his Williams F1 team, the surgery was a success, but in rare cases he suffered from respiratory failure due to complications from anesthesia. His Albon was reintubated and transferred to the intensive care unit.
Fortunately, by the morning of the 11th (Sunday), he had recovered enough to be removed from artificial respiration.
At Monza, Albon’s replacement, Nick de Vries, performed brilliantly to finish ninth in his F1 debut.
F1 Circus will end the European round with the Italian GP, and prepare for the Singapore GP at the Marina Bay city course at the end of this month.
Regarding Albon, the team said it will “focus on recovery and preparation” ahead of the first day’s free practice in Singapore in 18 days.
