Presented Wednesday evening, the iPhone 14 succeeds the iPhone 13. A term that we are not sure to use as the two models are very close to each other.
Between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 14, your heart may be swinging. Apple continues to market its 13th generation of smartphones, while a newcomer, the iPhone 14, was unveiled on Wednesday evening.
But on paper, difficult to find differences between these two models. Between iPhone 12 and iPhone 13already, Apple had not made any major changes, and it seems that the deal is similar this year.
Design: twin brothers
From the look point of view, first of all, the two smartphones are absolutely identical to each other. The reduced notch compared to the iPhone 12 is back, while the screen is almost borderless. Just look at the cover photo of this article. Except for the color of the device and the wallpaper, it is impossible to tell the two phones apart.
Note, however, that Apple has thoroughly revised its copy in terms of the colors offered. The iPhone in green is not yet available (it was released later, Ed.), and the pink color has been replaced by a very pretty mauve. By contrast, colors already available, like Product RED, are more vibrant on the iPhone 14, and blue is lighter and paler on this model as well.
Screen: recycling made in Apple
On the side of the screen, look no further. Apple has taken exactly the same panel from one model to another. 6.1″ and 6.7″ for each model, Super Retina XDR OLED, 60Hz refresh, 460 dpi definition and maximum brightness of 800 and 1,200 nits.
Performance: tied at the finish line
Unsurprisingly, in order to distinguish its Pro range from mid-range models, Apple has chosen to only reserve its new processors for more expensive models. This is how we end up with the same Apple A15 Bionic chip on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. Same number of CPU cores (6), Neural Engine of 16 cores, there is only the GPU that gets a small extra core to improve in-game performance.
This difference is only obvious on paper, there is little chance that you will notice the effects iPhone in hand. The memory remains, for its part, confined to 4 GB. Note that accident detection arrives, allowing the iPhone to know if you are involved in a collision between vehicles and to call for help.
The battery has finally been slightly improved on the iPhone 14, but not enough to wake the gods of Olympus there either. From 19 hours of battery life in video playback on the iPhone 13, we go to 20 hours on the 14. A small improvement of 5% is not huge, but it is worth taking. On the connectivity side, note the arrival, anecdotal, of Bluetooth 5.3.
Photos and videos: slight advantage to youth
Back then, the iPhone 13 set the bar high for photography. It is therefore difficult for any phone, even a new headed device, to offer an even better technical sheet. However, Apple has agreed to a few improvements here and there on its iPhone 14 to improve the photo quality somewhat.
Note that Apple has tried to improve its photos in very low light. The aperture of the main sensor is enlarged, going from ƒ/1.6 to ƒ/1.5. Thanks to the Photonic Engine algorithm, the details, textures and noise of the photos are improved pixel by pixel thanks to a background processing of the image. The TrueDepth camera, for selfies, also lets in more light, going from an ƒ/2.2 aperture to an ƒ/1.9 aperture.
Finally, it is the videos that are slightly improved, with the Cinematic Mode which is now able to film in 4K ( once morest HD previously) and a brand new Action Mode. Activated according to the user’s wishes, it is an advanced stabilizer that reduces movements in a very animated video.
Price: advantage over the previous generation
Since this Friday, the iPhone 14 is available for pre-order for first deliveries expected a week later, on September 16. In terms of price, the iPhone 14 costs €1,019 in its 128 GB version, €1,149 for 256 GB and €1,409 for 512 GB.
The iPhone 13 mini, with exactly the same performance, is now sold at €809 (128 GB), €929 (256 GB) and €1,159 (512 GB). If, however, you prefer a slightly larger smartphone, the prices of the iPhone 13 have risen to 909 € (128 GB), 1,029 € (256 GB) and 1,259 € (512 GB).
Instead of buying the iPhone 14 in its 128 GB version, for an additional 10 euros, you can have the iPhone 13 with 256 GB. This detail is worth thinking regarding, especially since reading these lines, you You will probably have understood that these two devices are very close to each other.
