Salary difference in Mexico

The wage gap in Mexico and low wages have been important topics of discussion in Mexico. In fact, in Mexico, most workers earn very low wages, and according to data from the National Survey of Occupation and Employment, published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI)from 2021, 3.25 million Mexicans do not even receive income for the work they do.

Furthermore, the same study reveals that only 13.61 million people earn income of up to one minimum wage; while there are 19.94 million who receive labor income between one and two minimum wages per month. The foregoing means that, at the end of 2021, 65 percent of those who have an occupation in the country, obtain a maximum of two minimum wages per day, which according to what is established by the Conasami has a value of 172.87 Mexican pesos per day.

Another study called ‘Trends in the Work Environment in Mexico 2018 (TELM)’developed by Kelly Services, revealed at the time that, when asked “what would your company have to do to make you feel more loyal to it?”50 percent of those surveyed indicated that they would have to pay more competent salaries.

Mexico, therefore, is in a great imbalance, so there is still a long way to go towards a smaller wage gap; Companies should take note of this if they want to avoid job rotation.
