ROME (Archyde.com) – Russian President Vladimir Putin had a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the safety of Ukraine’s Zaporiza nuclear power plant, the Kremlin said on the 11th (local time).
The Kremlin said in a statement on its official website that “President Putin has communicated to President Macron of concerns that Ukraine’s periodic attacks on the Zaporiza nuclear power plant, including the storage of radioactive waste, might have disastrous consequences.” .
Putin said Russian experts were taking steps to ensure the safety of the Zaporiza nuclear power plant, saying Russia was prepared to continue working with the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to agree on a “non-political” solution.
The Kremlin introduced that the call was made at the request of President Macron, and that the two leaders exchanged specific and candid views on the situation in Ukraine, especially on the issue of ensuring the safety of the Zaporiza nuclear power plant.
The Japoriza nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been bombarded by bombardment in recent weeks, and concerns regarding a nuclear accident have grown.
In the end, the Ukrainian state-owned company Energoatom, which operates the Zaporiza nuclear power plant, completely shut down its reactor on the same day.
Once shut down in a safe condition, the risk of radioactive material leaks remains if fighting continues.
In a phone call with Macron, Putin accused Ukrainian forces of using weapons supplied by the West when attacking civilian installations in the eastern Donbas region.
The two leaders also discussed global food security issues, the Kremlin reported.
Putin has urged Macron to ensure that the European Union does not interfere with the supply of Russian food and fertilizers to Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
Macron is in constant contact with Putin to mediate the resolution of the Ukraine crisis.
Prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he visited Russia in person in early February to meet President Putin.
It was the first time the two leaders talked on the phone since the 19th of last month. President Macron spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the 10th.
