The locomotive, a baggage car and a passenger car jumped off the tracks. The 34-year-old train driver and a 16-year-old passenger were seriously injured. They then had to be taken to the hospital. Eight other people suffered minor injuries.

There were a total of 28 passengers on the train, including several mayors of the region and railway employees. The special trip was carried out for the opening of a railway bridge in Oschatz.

A large contingent of over 100 firefighters, police officers and rescue workers were deployed. The derailed wagons on the Döllnitzbahn had to be supported to prevent them from tipping over completely. The recovery and rescue work lasted more than eight hours. A large station festival with numerous program items was planned for the weekend in Mügeln. After the serious accident the night before, the Döllnitzbahn canceled the event for Saturday. Train traffic on the route has also been suspended for the time being.

The event is scheduled to resume on Sunday. A minimized program is to be executed. The Döllnitzbahn wrote on Facebook: “With a view to the guests who have arrived, but also to our colleagues and contributors, we want to try to fill the resulting hole with life.”
