Baierbrunn (ots) – Because a flu infection can be particularly severe in older people, experts recommend vaccination. The health magazine “Apotheken Umschau” answers the most important questions regarding flu vaccination.
Breakthrough infections are usually mild
The flu vaccination is an important measure to protect yourself and slow down the spread of the disease. However, influenza in healthy children or adults under the age of 60 usually progresses without serious complications. That is why there is no vaccination recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission. In addition to risk groups and their contact persons, it also recommends that people over 60, pregnant women from the fourth month, the chronically ill, medical staff and employees or residents of old people’s and nursing homes get vaccinated.
In general, influenza vaccines work well. However, it can still happen that you get sick despite being vaccinated. This is usually the case when a new pathogen is spreading, once morest which the vaccine protects less well. “Breakthrough infections usually progress with milder symptoms or go completely unnoticed,” explains Dr. Kristina Huber, specialist in general medicine at the Tropical Institute of the LMU Clinic in Munich.
