A Windows update published last month prevented some users with new Microsoft accounts from logging into the system. According to Microsoft, the bug can be fixed either by a workaround or by a feature that was introduced in the operating system last year.

According to Microsoft, an update to Windows 11 version 21H2 introduced on August 25 addresses several issues with USB printing, Microsoft Store apps trust, Bluetooth headsets, and Microsoft Edge in IE mode.

In an advisory released this week, Microsoft said that following installing an update and adding a new Microsoft account user to Windows, some customers are unable to sign in for a short period of time following the first restart or following logging out.

“This issue only affects newly added Microsoft account users and only affects their first login,” the seller wrote. This issue only affects devices following adding a Microsoft account. It does not affect Active Directory domain user accounts or Azure Active Directory accounts.”

The software giant offered two ways to deal with it. The first is a workaround that basically asks the operating system to fix the system issue. According to Microsoft, if a user with a new account is unable to sign in, the issue should be resolved automatically following some time.

In this scenario, the user has to wait for the lock screen to appear once more. After that you should be able to log in as expected.

Users can also resolve issues using a feature called Undo Known Issues (KIR) that was introduced in March 2021. In a blog post at the time, Microsoft explained that KIR would quickly bring devices affected by Windows updates back into production. use.

“The infrastructure for restoring known issues in the operating system provides developers with a way to evaluate policies that define pathways for implementation,” Microsoft said. “This policy tells the operating system whether to leave repair enabled or not. If the policy states that the fix is ​​enabled, the new code will be triggered. If the fix is ​​disabled, the policy reverts the operating system to the old code if referenced in the code path.”

Windows monthly updates are enabled by default, with old icons disabled and new icons enabled. If a fix causes a serious problem, the Azure hosted service and Windows work together to update policy settings on the device to disable the fix that’s causing the problem.

According to Microsoft, companies can control their own KIR policy.

KIR may take up to 24 hours to automatically resolve login issues on unmanaged consumer systems and business devices. The seller said that restarting the Windows machine may speed up the process.
