Back itching is considered normal by many. But if it persists, it might be a sign of a disease or something wrong with the skin. And when the itching is in the back, it can be difficult.
Doctor Maria Copello, a member of the Spanish Society of Dermatologists, said that persistent or frequent back itching has many causes, including dry skin, allergies, pet allergies, and improper clothing.
She added that one of the reasons is skin irritation as a result of soap or chemicals in cleaning powders, or a skin disease, such as scabies, psoriasis or eczema, in addition to exposure to insect bites, burning and scars.
Arcia Gavin, a dermatologist at the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, explained that back itching is sometimes caused by damage to the spine, and this occurs due to lack of physical activity and the wrong movement or sitting uncomfortably.
He stressed that itching may also occur as a result of nervous system disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, in addition to the side reactions of some medications and diabetes.
He pointed out that the other causes of itching in the back or any area of the body are anemia, iron deficiency, and problems in the thyroid gland, liver, kidneys and tumors, according to the Spanish “Codet Plus” website, which provides health information.
The dermatologist said that most cases of back itching do not require a visit to the doctor because it is caused by dry skin, insect bites or rashes, and it decreases within several days, but if the situation continues for more than two weeks, despite moisturizing and taking care of personal hygiene, it is necessary to go for examination.
He advised the need for a medical examination, if the back itch is accompanied by a high temperature, inability to sleep at night or do daily activities, weight loss, extreme fatigue, redness of the skin and stomach pain.
