TOKYO (Archyde.com) – Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki reiterated on Thursday that it is important for the currency to remain stable in line with fundamentals. He also pointed out that “rapid changes are not desirable,” and indicated that he would not rule out any means and would respond as necessary.

He made the remarks at a post-cabinet press conference in the morning of the same day. Finance Minister Suzuki said, “Recent market fluctuations are rapid due to speculative movements rather than fundamentals,” adding, “I am concerned regarding excessive fluctuations.” He will be watching currency movements with a high degree of urgency and said he would “take necessary action in the currency market (if necessary).”

Regarding movements in the foreign exchange market, he said, “It’s true that the dollar is strong, and other currencies (not just the Japanese yen) are depreciating.”
