While the popularity of the Souls-like subgenre may have reached saturation point, there is still a healthy appetite for games that demand your blood, sweat, and tears. Case in point: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, got out of the rut and managed to rank fifth on Steam’s weekly global best-selling games list.
The game has risen from the eighth best-selling PC game last week to the fifth spot, according to SteamDB. In addition, the number of concurrent players has grown to 15,233 active players right now. Pretty unexpected for a game released in 2019.
The game takes place in medieval Japan of the Sengoku era. While moment-to-moment gameplay relies heavily on more methodical and slow-paced stealth than its more combat-focused predecessors, Sekiro still boasts FromSoftware’s trademark hard and fluid sword action. Also, while there are a few options to level up, Sekiro is undeniably a more streamlined experience than, say, Dark Souls.
When Sekiro was launched, it received a lot of praise and recognition and is widely regarded as one of the best games of 2019. However, one can only guess why it suddenly revived on Steam. Perhaps the people who were introduced to the genre through Elden Ring earlier this year are trying other games in the franchise. Either way, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a great game and you should definitely check it out if you haven’t already.
