The start of the 2022 school year is placed under the sign of gloom: 77% of French people say they are “distrustful” of the future, according to an Odoxa survey carried out for Abeille Assurances, Challenges et BFM Business and published Thursday, September 8

The morale of the French is at half mast in this return. According to an Odoxa survey carried out for Abeille Assurances, Challenges et BFM Business and published Thursday, September 8, 77% of respondents say they are “defiant” regarding the future. This is the “worst level of morale for the month of September” since the existence of this barometer.

The economic context might explain this gloom: 9 out of 10 French people are worried regarding inflation. “They even tend to overestimate it, thinking that it will reach 8.6% by the end of the year”, deciphers Odoxa. Faced with soaring prices, many have had to make sacrifices : 76% have reduced their spending on leisure, 74% on clothing, 61% on household products, and 58% on food spending. Efforts which seem to be insufficient since 4 out of 10 French people assure that they have already had to dip into their savings (31%) or make new loans (8%) to meet daily expenses.

Price increase

The economic situation is indeed enough to alarm them: prices continue to rise although inflation slowed in August for the first time in a year. She should stay sustainably high, according to INSEE at the end of August. The rise in consumer prices rose to 5.8% over one year, once morest 6.1% in July. This slight slowdown in inflation is due to “the slowdown in energy prices”, which still gained 22.2% over one year, once morest 28.5% in July.

Rising prices spreads throughout the economy : the prices of food products increased over one year by 7.7% in August, once morest 6.8% in July. The same goes for manufactured goods, which increased by 3.5%, once morest 2.7% the previous month, while services rose by 3.9%, as much as in July.
