Michigan votes on abortion rights

In June, the US Supreme Court amended its well-known “Roe v. Wade” case law, allowing for tough abortion legislation. In the USA, the states can now decide for themselves, Michigan will vote soon.

Voters in the US state of Michigan will also vote on an amendment to the constitution protecting abortion rights in November’s congressional election. The state Supreme Court ruled on Thursday. Previously, pro-abortion advocates collected more than 700,000 signatures to put the issue to a vote. A committee initially rejected the petition due to typographical errors. However, the Michigan Supreme Court overturned the committee’s decision and allowed the proposal to be voted on in November.

At the beginning of August there was already a similar referendum in the US state of Kansas. There, a clear majority had spoken out in favor of a constitutionally protected abortion right. It was the first such vote since the US Supreme Court overturned the then constitutionally protected right to abortion in the United States in June. By overturning the “Roe v. Wade” decision, the Supreme Court had made strict anti-abortion legislation possible for the states in the USA. There are now heated debates in the states regarding how abortion rights should be regulated.
