New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted bail to Siddique Kappan, a Malayali journalist who was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police. The UP government opposed the granting of bail, arguing that Cappan would influence the witnesses. The UP government also asked that they should not be allowed to go to Kerala if they give bail. The UP government has raised the issue that the Popular Front may be associated with the workers and it is dangerous.
The counsel for the UP government said that bail might be granted with conditions. Chief Justice UU Lalit pointed out that it is not appropriate to deny bail indefinitely. Siddique’s lawyer demanded that Cappan be granted bail and allowed to go there as his family is in Kerala.

Siddique Kappan was arrested on October 5, 2020. He was arrested when he was going to visit the house of a girl who was gang-raped in Hatras. The UP government had alleged that Siddique Kappan was working in concert with the Popular Front workers and that the visit was aimed at inciting riots.
