Meidling is expected to expand by almost 6,000 square meters by the end of this year. The reason for this is that the currently empty plot on which the extension of the Meidling trauma center is being built is in the tenth district of Vienna. The existing part of the accident hospital is in Meidling.
The boundary of the district will be shifted approximately 70 times 80 meters so that the entire hospital area will be in a single district following the construction of the new trauma center. “It is necessary for the trauma center to have a single address so that there is no confusion,” explains Michael Mader from the Vienna Municipal Department. It is also a formal requirement, since the registration data of the staff must not run on two different addresses, emphasizes Mader.
No residents affected
The new border runs south along Kerschensteinergasse and follows Kundratstrasse to the northern construction line. There the new district boundary runs at right angles until it meets the old district boundary. According to the City of Vienna, there are no negative effects on the population. In addition, no residents or residential buildings are affected.
Already the third border shift
In the past 30 years there has already been a border shift between the districts of Meidling and Favoriten twice. In 1992, in the immediate vicinity of the UKH Meidling, the boundary between Wienerbergstrasse, Köglergasse and Eibesbrunnergasse was shifted. In 1999 there was another change in the area of the Matzleinsdorf freight station, Längenfeldgasse, Kerschensteinergasse and Kundratstraße.
This border shift went southwest along the upper edge of the embankment of the Matzleinsdorf freight station to the railway bridge over Längenfeldgasse. From there the border goes south to the cadastral community of Meidling.
36 boundary changes since 1954
All border regulations and border shifts are documented in the district division law of 1954. Changes must first be approved by the respective districts. After administrative processing in the state government, the draft law will be published for four weeks. The draft with the explanations is available on the Internet Website of the Vienna city administration retrievable and is available for public inspection at the municipal district offices.
After this period, the state parliament will pass the new law and the border will be moved. This process takes regarding six months to three quarters of a year. “It doesn’t happen too often that borders are moved, regarding every two years,” says the head of Municipal Department 62 Christian Ruzicka. The upcoming border change in Meidling and Favoriten is already the 37th application to the Vienna state government.
Crazy district borders
Due to a new building at the AUVA trauma center, the district boundaries are being shifted: an area of 6,000 square meters on Kundratstrasse is moving from the 10th to the 12th district.
“Mostly minimal changes”
“There aren’t really any problems with such a change, since the changes are mostly minimal. In most cases, it doesn’t affect residents either,” explains Ruzicka. The cleansing of borders usually involves the adjustment of new buildings, escapes, the course of roads or straightening of roads.
The most recent border shift was in 2020 in the area of Vienna Central Station. New escapes were drawn, one on the Wiedner Gurtel between the third and tenth districts and one on the Südtiroler Platz between the fourth and tenth districts.
