Jony Ive doesn’t think your car should rely on multitouch

Jony Ive isn’t a fan of cars that use a lot of touchscreen controls, saying it’s an example of an “inappropriately driven” interface with something like multitouch.

during Team With former Apple chief design officer Tim Cook and Lauren Powell Jobs at Vox Media’s Code conference tonight, journalist Cara Swisher asked Ive what he thinks of current design trends. I said there were “great options with interfaces like multitouch,” but I said they might have gone too far in places – and maybe it’s time to change back towards more physical control.

“It’s possible that the pendulum will swing a little bit to get interfaces and products that are more tangible and more physically attractive,” Eve said. Swisher suggested that cars are an example of excessive multi-touch use, and Abe responded “as an example”.

With more and more cars using touch screens for things like climate or even driving controlsThere has been some controversy over whether removing the physical buttons and knobs reduces driver safety. Recently, a Swedish post V Bilajer sparked discussion with the test which measures how long it takes people to perform certain tasks such as adjusting the radio or the temperature. The post announced that physical buttons are replacing touch screens.

Swisher continued her question by asking Abby how he would design a car. “You know I can’t talk to you regarding this,” he joked to her.
