(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Ji-heon = Deputy Defense Minister Shin Beom-cheol concluded the ‘2022 Seoul Security Dialogue’ hosted by the Ministry of National Defense on the 8th and emphasized the importance of principles in the process of denuclearization of North Korea.

During the closing ceremony of the event held at the Lotte Hotel Seoul in Sogong-dong, Seoul on the same day, Vice Minister Shin said, “I was reminded once more that a principled approach is necessary to achieve complete and verifiable denuclearization of North Korea.”

“As the importance of the Indo-Pacific region grows, it was very timely to deal with the security issue in the In-Pacific region at the Seoul Security Dialogue,” said Vice Minister Shin. The international community expects it to do so,” he said.

“The new security threat facing humanity is unprecedented in its gravity and complexity, so we have learned the lesson that solidarity and cooperation from the international community are more important than ever to respond to this challenge,” he added.

During the three-day event held from the 6th to the 6th, Vice Minister Shin had a private meeting with Japanese Defense Deliberation Commissioner (Vice Minister) Masami Oka. It was the first face-to-face meeting between the South Korean and Japanese defense ministers since September 2016.

At the meeting, the Vice Ministers of Defense of South Korea and Japan agreed to continue the related cooperation, recognizing the importance of security cooperation between South Korea and Japan not only in normalizing defense cooperation but also in deterring and responding to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.

In addition, it was decided to additionally discuss the controversy over the so-called ‘patrol radar investigation’, which is a current issue between Korea and Japan.

In addition, Shin had bilateral talks with David Van Bale, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Assistant Secretary-General for New Security Threats, Stephanie Beck, the Canadian Vice Minister of Defense, and also met with Greek Vice Minister of Defense Nicolaos Cardalias. Greece signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korea on defense-industrial and logistics cooperation during the event.

In addition, he met with deputy ministers from South Africa, Estonia, Singapore, Mongolia, Hungary, Uganda, and Ghana to discuss cooperation.

Multilateral meetings were also held, including the AP4 meeting of Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, and the ASEAN-Korea Vice Ministers of Defense meeting.
